Reiki Healing for Lupus

What Is Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. Research estimates that at least 1.5 million Americans have lupus. Autoimmune diseases, like lupus, means that the immune system is not functioning properly. The fighting, killing off, and sweeping away foreign invaders like viruses, bacteria, germs, etc. is not quite doing its job and as with many autoimmune diseases, there is no definite answer as to why. It appears that genes may play a role, as well as possibly being triggered by things such as illness, injury, or a long period of stress. Normally our bodies create antibodies (anti-foreign body) that attacks whatever may come along that doesn’t belong there. Unfortunately, with autoimmune, the body has trouble deciphering what belongs and what doesn’t and proceeds to attack healthy tissue in its confusion using auto-antibodies resulting in inflammation, pain, and damage to various parts of the body.

Signs and Symptoms of Lupus

“Flare” ups of lupus are unpredictable and seem to just appear out of nowhere. Some days flares are more intense than others, often triggered by stress and exposure to ultraviolet light. Symptoms vary and may include:

Skin rashes (both on the face and body)

Joint and muscle pain

Hair loss

Fatigue

Mouth and nose ulcers

Chest pain (as a result of inflammation of the lining of the heart or lungs)

Anemia (a deficiency in the number or quality of red blood cells)

Poor kidney function

Seizures or visual disturbances (resulting from inflammation of the nervous system)

Fever
